The Incident Of Me'raaj

There are many authentic Ahaadeeth concerning the Israa'a and Me'raaj contained in Bukhaari, Muslim and other reliable collections of Hadeeth. Here we quote a few of them:

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, "while I was lying in the Hateem or (he may have said) in Al-Hijr, someone came to me suddenly and cut my body open from here to here (referring to the part of the body from the throat to just below the stomach.)" ... The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam further said, "He then took out my heart. A gold tray of Imaan (belief) was brought. My heart was washed and filled (with belief) and returned to my body.
Thereafter, a white animal, smaller than a mule and bigger than a donkey was brought to me." (This animal was the Burraaq) .... Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam (describing the animal) said, "The animal's one step (was so long that it) reached as far as the animal could see. I was carried on it and, accompanied by Jibraa’eel alayhis salaam we reached the nearest heaven. Jibraa’eel alayhis salaam requested for the door to be opened. It was asked, "Who are you?" He replied, "Jibraa'eel." He was asked, "Who is accompanying you?" He answered, "Muhammad". He was (once again) asked, "Has Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam been called forth?" Jibraa’eel alayhis salaam replied in the affirmative. Thereafter it was exclaimed, "Welcome to him. His is a most excellent visit."

When the door was opened, I entered and saw Adam alayhis salaam. Jibraa’eel alayhis salaam said, "This is yow father Adam alayhis salaam. Go and greet him." I went forward and greeted him. Adam alayhis salaam, replying my greeting said, "Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious son".

Thereafter Jibraa’eel alayhis salaam ascended with me until we reached the second heaven. (The procedure on the second heaven right up to the seventh are similar with regards to Jibraa’eel alayhis salaam having to knock and being questioned, etc., except that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam met different Prophets on each heaven. On the second heaven Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam met Yahyaa alayhis salaam and Eesaa alayhis salaam; on the third heaven he met Yusuf alayhis salaam; on the fourth Idrees alayhis salaam; on the fifth, Haaroon alayhis salaam; on the sixth he met Moosaa alayhis salaam, and on the seventh he met Ibraaheem alayhis salaam.)
